Chiffon Cardigan Free Pattern in Spring Spree

I don't know about you but I'm more than ready for this winter to be over. Don't get me wrong I get excited at the prospect of an impending snow storm but what I really want is to go outside without a jacket. To wear breezy clothing and to smell the spring air.

When I saw this material at Hancock Fabric I immediately knew what it was destined for- this lovely, loose, delicate chiffon cardigan. Great for a dainty coverup and SO STINKIN' EASY TO MAKE. 

I'd say you could make this cardigan in just an hour if you're good at cutting chiffon. The hardest part of this cardigan is cutting the chiffon. Seriously. That's it. The whole pattern is just two pieces. The body and the sleeve. Just under one yard of fabric used. You could probably try this pattern out with some left over chiffon in your stash just to see if it works for you.

I love how this cardigan is long yet delicate. It helps to avoid the frumpy look that you can sometimes get with long cardigans. It's so breezy you could even wear this in the summer, especially in the evenings.

I added the bauble fringe to the edges. I think it helps define the shape of the cardigan. If you simply used chiffon it might look a little too invisible. I also love how this cardigan looks while you're standing in sunlight. So romantic. It's just a shame I could take some outdoor pictures so you could get a good look at how gorgeous it looks in the sun.

Two Sisters Heart Blouse Free Pattern: Chevron Blushes

Just in time for Valentine's Day is another free pattern for your little loved one. Cute Valentine cut out backed peplum blouses in two sizes for two sisters;-)

Lily and Molly wanted something special to wear for Valentine's Day. Rather than go down to Target and pick something easy I decided to make something homemade with a free pattern instead. I got the fabric at JoAnn's Fabric.

I used a ribbed tank top underneath since it seemed a little riske to have the kids showing off a bare back at school;-) But the tank tops were perfect and can be found at Target.

There are two patterns. One I made to fit Lily who's 10 and the other to fit Molly who's 7. For the pattern I lengthened Lily's blouse about 1" longer than the one in the photos as I thought it came out a little short. However, my kids are super tiny for their age. If you want to make these blouses for your kids first take their waist measurement and make sure it matches the pattern so you don't end up making one too tiny. Lily's pattern has a 26.5" waist and Molly's pattern has a 22.5" waist. Each pattern has left a little room so it's not too tight. On an average sized child I'd say these might be more of a fit for an 8 and 5 year old. You can always widen the pattern to suit your child.

I handmade the buttons myself. I recovered fabric buttons. It's a bit tedious but they comes out looking so good. I was able to handmake Lily's gold buttons and gold piping which goes around her heart. Here's a great tutorial on Instructables which shows you how.

Ice and Wood Buffalo Check: Winter Wonderland Free Skirt Pattern

Newest variation of the Winter Wonderland Free Skirt Pattern. Get the pattern and instructions here. The buffalo check pattern has a mix of browns and blues sort of like the scene outside mixed ice and woods.

I found this fabric for only $2 a yard at my favorite fabric outlet just blocks down the street from my house. I wish you all had a fabric outlet down the street from your house like this one. They have a $1 table and a $2 table where you can find fabrics that probably used to be upwards of $20+ a yard. And these tables are long and piled 5 rolls deep with fabric. It's pretty amazing.

Metallic Dot: Simply Shift Free Dress Pattern + DIY sequin cardigan

Newest variation on the Simply Shift pattern. The only difference between this dress and the others is that I added four inches of gold lamé to the hem. That way when I cinched the waist with a belt the back didn't feel too short. Plus it added a nice party flare. The gold lamé was a little too gold to match the swiss dot so I used brown iDye and dyed it a nice copper color. iDye is amazing. It dyes anything. I used a plastic slotted spoon to mix red dye into white fabric. It dyed the fabric along with the spoon a deep burgundy.

Twas the Night Frock: Free Pattern

Just wanted to bring back an oldie but goodie in case you're in need of a New Year's Dress for your daughter.

IMPORTANT: YOU MUST ADD SEAM ALLOWANCES TO PATTERN!!!!!!! 
Note: This bodice was fitted for my daughter who had a very small waist for her age. You might want to take it out an inch or two depending on your child. If you do take it out on the bodice add an equal amount to the side seams for the front and back (ie: 2": add 1/2" to each front and back side seam), also remember to add the same amount to the waistband and double that measurement for the skirt (that goes for the lining as well).

A Frock of Seagulls: Simply Shift Free Pattern

Newest variation on the Simply Shift free pattern! I bought this navy seagull fabric at Hancock. They had a great selection of chiffon print. Way better than JoAnn's IMHO.

I thought it would be interesting to pair this print with hot pink tights and gold accessories. I got the gold necklace at Old Navy for only $10. I can't find it online but it might still be in your store.

Holiday Tartan: Cozy Fleece Leggings Free Pattern

These pants would make for great easy Christmas gifts. I timed how long it took to construct these after I cut the fabric. All together it took just over 20 minutes. Make 3 in just one hour!

Southwestern Snug: Cozy Fleece Leggings Free Pattern

Another fleece leggings free pattern variation! I bought this southwestern print at Hancock Fabric for only $5 a yard! I wore these outside today and they were great at keeping me warm through the cold wind and snow. These pants would make for great easy Christmas gifts. Ikat Get Enough: Cozy Fleece Leggings FREE PATTERN

More great fleece prints! I also got this one at Hancock Fabric as well. They just had so many great fleece prints there when I went. I liked this print because it wasn't your typical plaid or winter scene. Not that I don't LOVE those as well but this was a nice change of pace.

By the way all of these fleece fabrics I bought on sale for only $5 a yard. Since my pattern is only 1 yard I only paid $5 for all these great pants! Love it! The whole project takes only 20 minutes after you cut the material. I like to buy a whole bunch of fabric at once and cut multiple layers of each pattern piece so when I got to make the next version I'm not having to pull out the pattern and pin and cut which takes a while.

Fall Tartan: Cozy Fleece Leggings Free Pattern

The cold weather bothers me more than it does others. Jeans and cords just feel cold against my skin. So I made a fleece leggings pattern. You can find it here along with my first version. Here's my second version: A classic fall Tartan print.

This is great for looking put together but not feeling uncomfortable. I wear this to pick up my kids from school, to make a quick trip to the grocery store, to walk my daughter to a neighbor's house. I love it! The fabric was bought at Hancock. If you like it it's probably still there.

Cozy Fleece Leggings Free Pattern: Into the Woods

Have any of your seen the new softer than ever fleece and plush leggings? Cuddl Duds makes some nice ones at Walmart for only $9.96. Although they are all sold out except in black. Booo! So I decided to make my own version of Cuddl Duds for fleece and plush material. Hancock Fabric and JoAnn's Fabric had some nice fleece print. Some classic Tartans, some woodsy prints and some Ikat prints. Here's my first version. A quaint woodsy print.

Before you start cutting. I'm super short. 5'1. I made the pattern to fit me, so when you're cutting this pattern keep that in mind. I recommend extending the leg if needed. I only used 1.2 yards for this project but again, I'm also only 5'1.

I haven't had the chance to photograph a tutorial for this. I plan on doing that tomorrow. But in the meantime I can tell you how the pieces fit.

1. Sew the front leg pieces together at the crotch seam, right sides together.
2. Sew the back leg pieces together at the butt seam, right sides together.
3. Sew the back leg piece to the front leg piece at the outside leg seams, right sides together
4. Sew the inseams of the front and back leg pieces together.
5. Turn the waist seam over by 1/4" and press.
6. Fold the waist seam over again by 1.25" and press.
7. Sew waist seam in place, leaving a 2" gap open in the back.
8. Take 1" wide elastic and wrap around your waist. Pull it just a little bit taught depending on your comfort level. Leave 1" extra for your hem space. Cut.
9. Thread elastic through the waist seam. Sew ends of elastic together.
10. Sew the opening of the waist seam shut.
11. Hem the bottom of your leg openings by 1/2".

Simply Shift Free Pattern: Dressy Frock in Sandstone & Lace

Newest variation on the Simply Shift Free Pattern! I used lace fabric from Hancock Fabrics and a burnt orange lining that reminded me of the color of sandstone.

Again, this dress took me an hour and 30 minutes to sew after the fabric had been cut.

Simply Shift Free Pattern: Date Night Frock in Desert Sunset

Here's the next installment of my Simply Shift free pattern! Get the free pattern and instructions here. I used chiffon fabric from Hancock Fabrics. It's a gorgeous abstract pink, coral and grey wide print. 

I've found that Hancock Fabric has a much better selection of apparel fabrics than JoAnn's. There's more large prints in fabrics that are appropriate for clothing. JoAnn's has a lot of great quilter's fabrics in smaller print. Plus I bought this fabric for only $2.50 a yard on sale! The lining was also $2.50 so altogether I only spent $5 on this dress!
