Tutorials 4

I just paid $10 for pattern weights from JoAnn's and honestly, they're not even that heavy. But check out this cute tutorial on making your own pattern weights. You could make them in various weights and sizes. Zaaberry uses beans to fill her patten weights but I would use something a little heavier like BBs, sold at any sporting goods store.

My mom uses weights that a friend's husband made. He works in a machine shop so he cut a solid steel rod (about 1.5 inch diameter) into short lengths. They are really nice and heavy and when you set them down, nothing is going to move anywhere!

So if you know someone who is handy with machinery you could always ask for a favor!

I've always just used canned food (like tuna cans or canned beans). Not pretty, but gets the job done.

I saw a tutorial online once of someone who used flat washers and wrapped ribbon around them. Very cute and economical ;)

I am like Susan, I use canned goods frequently.

So cute but my boys would totally steal these from me in a heartbeat.

I also use tuna cans and the occasional sandstone coaster.

What are pattern weights for? I'm new to sewing and I have heard of them, but do I use them instead of pins?
Thanks!

@MissyYes! Sometimes pins can make holes or puckers in your fabric especially if they are not sharp enough. Plus weights are a lot faster to use sometimes. But I've found, if they're not heavy enough the paper will shift.

I don't even know if bbs would heavy enough. Perhaps something made of tungsten? That's heavier than lead.

Heavy books are great as you can slide them along and smooth things out too. Cherrie

How about filling them with the glass marbles sold in most floral departments at your favorite craft store. I'd wait for them to go on sale half off.

Since the marbles are so heavy, the weights could be made smaller, too.
